Mount Hope Mine

(...continued) The ore was accessed via the Elizabeth Tunnel, an adit driven for approximately 850 feet southwest where the ore was worked by connecting shafts. Slightly northeast of the adit, the mine was worked from the Elizabeth Shaft to work a deeper portion of the vein. By 1909, the "Elizabeth Mine" as this part of the operation was called, was worked about 500 feet beneath the collar of the Elizabeth Shaft and for a horizontal distance of more than 1,700 feet (the Elizabeth Shaft was eventually deeped to 1,120 feet).

The Elizabeth Mine operated continuously between 1874 and 1880 producing approximately 30,000 tons of ore each year. Shortly after 1880, the Elizabeth Mine closed, reopening in 1883 but not being actively worked until 1889 or 1890. From this time forward until atleast 1909, it is known to have operated without interruption. It should also be noted that by 1900, most of the ore was taken from the Elizabeth Mine alone.
