Due to the recent and CARELESS demolition of the Richard Mine changehouse and headframe, I am posting some quick photos here to remember our history by since. Mt Hope Historic Park should have the word "Historic" slashed from its name since they fooled the public into thinking the site was important enough to be saved. Discussion here: http://www.ironminers.com/mineforum/viewtopic.php?p=8941

These towers once featured the name of the mine.

I took this picture 43 years after the mine closed.

The headframe of the Sweetser Shaft and the Mount Hope Mineral Railroad can be easily seen in this vintage shot.

This is a different angle.

A picture I took of the changehouse a number of years before the Historical Society and Park Commission got to it.

It is a steel headframe and attached to the ore concentrating building. Look at the third slide.

Has anyone tried contacting the Historical group and ask why they tore them down? I know they probably wouldnt get back to you but there are questions that need answered.

They were worried about making the place "safe" and were not at all concerned about preservation. They also adulterated other areas in the park related to the mine while blazing trails including removing hoisting cable. Any industrial archeologist would cringe at the actions of this society and park commission. I would rather see this area developed over than see it intentionally destroyed for no good reason.

The headframe portion of the complex was removed long ago, before I ever took a photograph. The base of the headframe was extant but that is it. We are talking about the remainder of the complex that was there that was destroyed for no reason.

I can't believe what is happening! I'm so happy that Mike took the pictures and gathered up all the great information. This is just another reason why we have to maintain excellent research, you just never know!
