Never seen one. I have only seen pictures of "Fireless Cookers". and I have only heard of compressed air locos.

Hey, Banks!

Way to go; awesome pictures! I definitely want to take this tour! They obviously have a lot of fascinating underground rail-related stuff, too! Most definitely real "foam material"! Hopefully it will be dark enough in the mine so that the other members of the tour group don't notice me drooling on my shirt and shoes! :)

I was wondering, other that the tours is there any actual mining going on here? Also, how many levels does this mine have?

Regards,
Fred M. Cain

I think you need rail rehab.

The mine has quite a few levels but not sure how many exactly.. I know we were zinging past them on the cage ride.. They had the landings lit up. As for active mining, they're not at all. However, just over the knoll from them there is an active UG gold mine trying to make a go... and no........ theres no tracks in that one.

Who needs rehab, me or Fred? I believe that if the 261 ever came through town, I'd end up needing duct tape to keep me from drooling all of my bodily fluids away.

AMEN! When I get my Senior pictures taken this summer, I'll be posing on this beauty-Image
She was the locomotive that my Great-great-grandfather was the engineer of. this is the locomotive that I expressed interest about restoring to operation. When the pictures are done, I'll post 'em.

A shot through a steel grill over a portal right beside the county road up Henson Creek out of Lake City in Colorado.

The orebin outside of the mine portal in the initial post, apart from the rails leading to it now missing, it appears just the same as in the photos from 1996.

A look at the Bobtail Mine in Blackhawk, Colorado. This was a tour way back before tours were fashionable.
Here is a view in the early 1910's from the Denver Public Library L-200

Mavelous Cornish stonework and a Mancha outside to boot.
Still intact but with the gambling culture in the area now it probably won't reopen as a tour anytime soon.

Was the mine near Henson Creek served by a narrow gauge railroad that Colorado is famous among modelers for?

no Dave, no rail up to Henson but the Denver & Rio Grande built a branchline to Lake City but there it ended. I guess any ore was milled just downstream aways at the Ute-Ulay Mine mill that is still standing.

Ok. I asked because the ore bin looks like it would have emptied into rail cars.

Dave,
Horse drawn wagons and later trucks maybe, that ore bin is north of the Phoenix Mine, close to Idaho Springs but a long way from Lake City and Henson. The grade up Trail Creek is way too steep for rail, wouldn't be worth the cost of a Shay either but is only a short distance to the confluence with Clear Creek where there was the Colorado & Southern's 3ft ga. line to Silver Plume.
