Huber Breaker society plans online fundraiser

The Huber Breaker Preservation Society hopes an Internet-based fundraiser slated for the spring goes viral.

The society's board of directors met Tuesday to continue mapping plans for the project, which seeks to raise $100,000-plus for continued development of the Miners' Memorial Park in Ashley.

The society will post a three-minute video, produced by John Welsh of Philadelphia, on crowdfunding website Indiegogo. Welsh's video includes background on the breaker, the preservation society's work and the importance of maintaining historic links to the region's anthracite era. Other mine history-related websites also will link to the video.

The society plans to raise money during a 60-day fundraising campaign. Ray Clarke, chairman of the society's board, said the board needs $250,000 to fully develop the park, which sits on 3.1 acres donated by Earth Conservancy.

The park is adjacent to the 26-acre property of Paselo Logistics LLC, of Philadelphia, which is razing the Huber Breaker. Demolition was ongoing this week. Workers peeled steel sheets off the breaker and hauled material away in dumpsters on large trucks. Conveyors and outbuildings have been razed.

Clarke said the online fundraiser could kick off in late spring. The hope is that it will gain nationwide attention, bringing in donations to aid the society in completing the park.

"It will be great if this thing goes viral," Clarke said.

The society has another fundraiser set for Friday, March 21, at 7 p.m. at the Hanover Area Junior-Senior High School. The Patchtown Players will present a series of vignettes on anthracite folklore. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for students, Clarke said.

Clarke said donations can be mailed to the society in care of the St. Nicholas Federal Credit Union, P.O. Box 1213, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18703.

Indiegogo is a crowdfunding platform where people who want to raise money can create fundraising campaigns to tell their story and get the word out, according to its website.
