Wow, excellent find Dan! Were there any stopes inside? I guess they mined for ice? Good work! :D

that looks like a pretty low tunnel. they must have had some sweet little low-vein ice cars in there! Ceiling looks good. any arctic bats?

I sent my kids in there to inspect it. First one in was my daughter who was fearless, then my son went in. Cealing looked solid! Seems it was a haulage tunnel, no winzes or stopes. :D :D

Dan, that looks amazing. the opening is huge! my grandfather worked in a similar ice mine here in pa. by dumb luck he happened to have a camera with him one day and happened to stop an ice haulage train as it exited the mine. this was a small operation and they acquired their equipment from the hudson coal company. they were discarding some mine locomotives and cars when a colliery of theirs closed and the shlamole ice company bought it. this is the mine my grandfather worked at in 1927, the shlamole ice co. no. 23 tunnel.

Image

Ice Haulage Train as it exits the No. 23 tunnel. notice the locomotive is still marked in hudson coal markings.

Image

Notice the bank of the curve to permit high speed haulage. these guys thought of everything!

Image

a shot from slightly far away on top of the near by waste ice bank.

The Train has passed showing the opening to the no. 23 tunnel.

Image

after the extensive vein of ice was worked out and robbed the mine was shut down. this pic was taken fallowing abandonment in 1948.

Image

The no. 23 tunnel today. when it was closed, as typically done, they just pushed a pile of ice in front of it. due to global warming the pile is dropping down and access now can be gained once again. any one up for a little ice mine exploration?

   Hahahahahaha! I'm up for it! This is one of those mines where you need the gortex white uniform. Thats funny though.... I don't see a trolly line for that mojo? Must be storage battery too.... I'd like to talk to your grandfather about his experiences some time.

nice, thats why it is a combination locomotive. they bought it off of hudson coal, if you look closely you can still make out their name. they had to not use the trolley wire there because of a methane air problem.
