I went to Hugh Force Park today in Wharton. Lat time I was there, I noticed on one of the historical signs a reference to an unmarked trail that lead up Irondale Mountain supposedly past some old mining areas. Consultation with some old maps indicated those mines might be the JD King and Johnson Hill.

Anyway, the trail leads past a large nine hundred or so foot trench. From the trench you can see over the canal to the north. Here is part of it.

But what interested me was what I found on the oposite side of the hill overlooking Wharton to the south. What appeared to be an adit cut into the side of the hill. My pictures unfortunately don't capture the trench like entrance but after seeing hundreds of similar cuts, I'm pretty sure what it is.

Looking straight on. Two large tailings piles and some pits are behind me.

Very interesting find Jackstraw. Do you have any speculation as to what mine this possible adit might be associated with? I really like the way they cleanly sliced right through the bedrock like butter -- that sure looks like a clean cut!

Hi Mike,

If it is an adit, then perhaps it is associated with the two mines I mentioned above. The only reason I walked on this side of the ridge was I recall one of the Abandoned Iron Mine publications noted something was in the area.

The other thought I had was this was an old millstone quarry. I could see a nice grinding wheel for a grist mill being made from that piece of rock. But that doesn't explain why there is a deep trench leading up to it and slumped ground right before the hillside.
