Here is a good article on gold found at the Cobalt mines in CT

http://www.nytimes.com/1986/07/08/scien ... ticut.html

It really seems that a lot of old mines in the northeast may have been overlooked for gold, seems like a modern day prospector could have some fun reexamining many of these old mines.

I know there is a supposed gold mine in Newtown CT but think this was a hoax

There is also supposedly placer gold in Harwinton CT on lead mine brook off Rt.222. Might have to check this one out sometime.

Anybody else hear of gold in CT ?

I met a guy who panned near Torrington. I've also heard theres lots of fine gold near Beacon Falls, CT

Lead Mine Brook for sure- minedat.org has a pic of a picker from there.

Im personally interested in Ridgfield because I'm only a few miles away in NY.

Here is a link to minedat.org CT gold

I have a buddy in southern NH. who finds gold where there isnt supposed to be any- good luck!

That's a nugget though so that must have been placer, it's also the same photo from mindat for lead mine brook. Any other references to lode gold in the railroad cut?

In the event you are interested, here is a thread and a detailed discussion regarding the Gold present ( or not present) at the Great Cobalt Mine in Conn.

Very intresting link jackstraw. The minedat message board is entirely new to me. I hope there is as much debate over the McCoy sample. I wonder if there are any known NJ lode claims?

Thanks.

That debate on Mindat was maddening. I'm the David Bernstein who pops up from time to time in that thread. The guy who started that debate popped in, threw down the gauntlet and refused to explain what his agenda was other then to attempt to force folks to concede that historical literature was wrong-ounces per ton. In any event, he went away after meeting a good deal of push back to his advesarial style.

I am unaware of lode claims in New Jersey. Rumors, yes. But nothing substantive. The most intriguing is report of a gold mine off the Appalachian Trail above Wallpack, NJ.

Good old "keyboard warrior". I'll give him some credit for drawing out knowledgable people on the subject. I also liked his quote "A gold mine is a hole in the ground with a liar up top". Jackstraw- I looked at your profile on minedat- wow, you've done some time in the field. There should be a thread about the people who are into this stuff- how and why, etc. I've all ways been into rocks but geology 101 is the extent of my knowledge. I'm also a bit of a history buff as I guess most of us are. Please take a look at the post I put in the general forum for the top of Turkey Mtn.
