We wanted to feature some of our best pictures for some of the mines we have visited throughout the years of documenting mining history. This mine in particular, we have visited a number of times and even given tours for others to inspire. It is actually located in the Southern Anthracite field. For the time being it will go unnamed to both protect the site and prevent others from any of the hidden dangers present in coal mines.

Walking down the old muleway to the lower level of the mine

Image
At the end of the muleway, an old airdoor to enter the upper rock tunnel of this mine. Notice the old door counterweight still hanging from the airdoor frame.

This is a view of the transfer car slope for mine

Image
This is the transfer car which would have ridden on the rails of the slope. This car would be used to carry fully loaded coal cars lifted from the shaft an upper rock tunnel before it would be hauled out of the mine.

Image
This is a view of the counterweight car on the counterweight slope. This car would have been used to offset the weight of the coal car to ease the strain on the transfer hoist seen above.

An old picture inside of the tool shop inside of the mine.

Image
Another older photo, this is an old gangway which leads into the pump room for the lower levels of the mine.

Image
This photo, familiar to many as it has been featured many times on this site, is a shot of two 13 ton General Electric main haulage trolley pole mine locomotives. Notice the copper trolley wire still present in this photo. The copper has recently been stolen out of the mine and apparently sold for scrap. A priceless shot though.

Image
Another view of the landing for this level of the mine. This is a two compartment shaft which was used to raise coal cars from deep within the mine.

Image
An interesting shot I took of the shaft.

Image
This is a view looking down one of the compartments of the shaft. Notice the timber cribbing still supporting the structure of the shaft.

Image
This is a view of the mine foreman's office.

Image
On one of the prior tours we gave of the mine, this shot was us relaxing enjoying a nice meal inside of the mine.

A view of the IM and UGM crew inside the mine during one of our documentation missions.

the locomotives look like they are waiting for the return of the miners, ready to be called into duty to clear away the rock and coal. I like the black and white one best. It looks very eerie.

I just had a thought looking over these again. When you guys are coming around the bend, it looks like the first few men of a shift, coming to work.

It's been a while since I have seen those pictures. The scrapping of the copper was a real shame. As you can see in these photos, the copper line almost makes the mine seem operational. You rarely ever see copper in mines, it was such a treat the first time we went in there to find it intact.
