Thought I'd start a post on hand tools used in coal mining.

Let's start off with Post Drills:

I have two in my collection, one is cranked at the end, the other on the side. They are both designed to feed the drill into the hole as it is turned (notice the threads).

The drill pushed back against the "post". The post is made of wood and expanded between the top and bottom rock to lock it in place. The drills themselves were located in a set of notches on the post and the force of drilling kept the drill in the notch. I unfortunately only have half of the post. The other half went between the wood sides, through the square metal rings at the end. The screw at the top allowed for small adjustments in height. There might have been another adjustment screw at the opposite end.

John,

THOSE ARE IN GREAT SHAPE :D :D

NICE FIND :!: :!:

I have a catalog ad from Fulton in 1918 but does not show this exact model. I will scan in it tonight & post it. I checked another year 1925 & Fulton was not listed as a supplier.

I also have another mfg. that is similar to this construction showing the missing leg I will post that as well so you know what it looks like.

Cool stuff.
