About 1984. Ol' boy stopped me one day to show me the pony he bought his kids. He was known to wildcat, and I had a little bell going off in my head, so I told him not to let me see that pony underground. About two weeks later, I come around the bend and what do I see...

He popped a round off at me and ran in the mine. That's my truck with the door open in the road. I ran in after him, crappy 2-D cell battery government flashlight cutting off and on, hiding behind timbers as I went deeper. Didn't get him that day, but later on we settled up.

Don't believe you see this around any more. Good old days.

Yep. That was in TN. At that time you could mine 2 tons /year for personal use. Couldn't sell it. Anything over 25 tons was a felony. Had five Tennessee Bureau of Investigation officers assigned full time to our Division. When I first started my area in TN, I had more illegal sites than legal. Nights, weekends, and holidays were busy.

East Campbell County near Claiborne County. Just south and east of the town of White Oak as I recall.
