You know you really oughtta try keeping them on the rail. We had an SW1500 go on the ground the other night between another 1500 and ten loads of ethanol which all miraculously stayed on the rail, don't know how the other unit or the cars stayed on but I guess a rail broke underneath the engine, and it jumped all eight on the ground.

when that vulcan was at the trolley museum i remember seeing it there, was hoping they were going to restore and run it. oh well. the other vulcan shop switcher, no.2 is just down the road from my moms house in lake winola. a guy rescued it from the scrap, painted it and has it in his yard. its a 12 ton but not center cab. i think i put pics of it up in one of these posts, ill have to go back through them and check.

WHITCOMB LOCOMOTIVE
7-Ton
@ Rochelle Railroad Park, Ill

from www.rochellerailroadpark.org :
Whitcomb Locomotive
The 7 ton Whitcomb locomotive cost $3,100 in 1928 when it was purchased by Connor Brothers, Brooklyn, NY. At the timeWhitcomb workers received $25 per week for a 5 ½ day week. Over 500 of this size were built armor plated for switch work during World War I. The locomotive was restored and donated to a museum in St. Mary's PA, where they were going to re-gage it to "two foot" gage and run the locomotive at their railroad park. They decided to sell it to Rochelle and let it return to its hometown. Whitcomb locomotives were produced for over 40 years in Rochelle at what is today a pre-stressed concrete plant on east 5th Ave. Over 5,312 locomotives were built and shipped all over the world. In 1906 Whitcomb produced the first successful gasoline locomotive in the world and they were shipped to southern Illinois coal mines where they operated for two years before switching to electric engines. The firm later produced 2,054 diesel locomotives ending production in Rochelle in 1946. The firm also manufactured the Partin-Palmer automobile from 1915 to 1919 in Rochelle. The City has acquired a 1915 model that is on display in the City and Town Hall museum.
