Nice to see a preserved coal mine locomotive with air brakes, not many around. Wonder if it still has the motor driven air compressor under the hood. I think the air brake components were added later.

what do you call a locomotive with a short cab, like the Whitcomb in the post on page 14? is there a specific name?

John

From the Beckley Exhibition Mine in Beckley, WV, a pair of Mancha storage battery motors, that, according to the tourguides, were converted from trolley-types.

that looks like it has a real tight wheel base, must have been some sharp curves where that operated! interesting design. john, you seem to be hunting out all the mine locomotives in the state and then some!

AND, what may be my favorite, so far, the super-low Atlas Type F, the back-up motor at Beckley:

Here is a shot of a Trolley Pole Mining locomotive from the Scrub Oaks mine in New Jersey / NJ operated by the Alan Wood Steel company.

Can anyone identify this locomotive? A Mancha or Atlas?

Well, Ray, as far as air brake equipped motors go, I did find this pair up at the East Broad Top. They look like GE products to me.

I'll leave it up to you to guess the gauge.

Are those mining locomotives? They look more like narrow guage trucks for a GE 44 tonner or similar locomotive. But I could be wrong. Anyone?
