Illinois puts a number of maps on-line. I will find the link.

Lots of useful free stuff at that link. I'm assuming from the location that you're looking for the old lead mines. Sorry, but I can't help you there, never been to that part of the state, it's about the only part of Illinois I haven't visited. I'm betting there are a couple mines near Galena.

I'd look at the digital topos available in the above link. FYI, the 1:24000 with the higher dpi tend to be newer maps, they are better quality, but the newer maps don't show the old mine locations, or not all of them. At least that's been my experience for Southern Illinois.

If you want to look for old flourite mines or strip mines in Southern Illinois I can be a bit more helpful.

I'm sure they do.

But if I were being honest, it would be hard to top Nevada. Worked out there a little over a year, couldn't count the number of holes in the mountains I saw there. I think my best find was an old mercury mine. The drift had more standing water than I felt comfortable with, but I got a couple nice samples from the waste rock pile.

I don't claim to know mercury geology/metalurgy, but that sounds like bad poo. Right up there with lead mines and radioactive stuff.

IMHO, the Pa. guys have a very unique situation, that is not duplicated in the Illinois basin. At least not from my perspective here in Indiana. Our Stripping opertions cover sections of land and the acitve pits are usually out of site. (FYI - a Section is a survey term equal to 1 sq mile or 660 acres) Security is usually rather high, especially with current MSHA rules. In most cases the Operators are large companies. And underground mines are generally deeper.

I have never heard of any old workings here in the Basin, where you can park in a residential neighborhood, walk two blocks. and spend the afternoon exploring an UG mine. That said I'm all for looking at any mine where access can be gained legally or with plausable deniability. ( I don't run fast and I can't talk my way out of anything. )
