Where yous get your carbide peas? I found some places on line, like $17/pound. I have a lot left but it all turned to powder. Unless it's still good in the lamp in powder form?

John,

Has it been kept dry? I would think dry powder should be OK. But if it has picked up moisture, it reacted.

I have a hardware store in the next town over, that still carried it the last time I bought any. The on-line stores are cheap, but mostly because they don't follow the Haz-Mat Labeling and Shipping regs.

Thanks Doug. Ya, it's dry. Been in a plastic food container since Bella gave it to me. Opened it a few times I used it. I guess as long as I'm not going to blow myself up I'll put some in the lamp tonight and try it.

If it is powder, it is spent because it has slowly reacted. While you might think it was kept dry, you probably had some moisture which got in there which caused it to react. Carbide can be tricky to store as it will slowly react to moisture which could have gotten trapped into your container. What I usually do is put it in air tight ziplocks (which I double up) and I squeeze out as much air as possible before sealing them. I sometimes get some reaction with a little powder, but this usually helps. Also try not to ever open it unless you are ready to use.

Ya, I was thinking the only way it could do that was to have been exposed to moisture. Prob opened it on a humid day to load the lamp. Mom has one of those food storage vacuum things, maybe if I ever order more carbide I'll make individual packets of it.

I know that I am showing how green I am, but what is that, and how will it prolong the life?

You probably had some of it which you threw out. You always find small packs of it included with many electrical items to help keep it dry. If you haven't google'd it, it absorbs moisture to keep the items dry. I've actually seen it sold recently as a new type of cat litter! Just scoop out the poop and the desiccant manages the yellow stuff.. Don't know how well it really works though..

Are those the things that come in packages of beef jerky and in new shoes?
