This is a railroad tunnel that has some mine workings in it. There are also 2 fan houses that used to blow air through the tunnel. pretty neat, never seen something quite like this before!

The rest of the pics will be on the UGM site soon.

The tunnel was built by the Reading Railroad, later operated by Conrail. Now it is Reading & Northern Railroad. One of the more interesting looking railroad tunnels in Northeast PA.

Awesome pictutures, i took the last one and put it as my wallpaper on my computer. The slogan on the front of the train is pretty cool "The road of Anthracite". Good stuff thanks for the pictures!!!

Here's some pics I've taken of Reading & Northern over the past 2 years, mainly near my home in Ashland:

I also have Reading & Northern pics posted at:

Sorry if I got off topic, but Reading & Northern is "The Road of Anthracite"

The tunnel was actually completed by the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad (which later became the Reading Company) in 1862 to bypass the Mahanoy Plane. The Reading RR operated it until 1976 when they went bankrupt and it was absorbed by Conrail. Conrail opereated it until 1990 when they decided to sell off their short lines service and concentrate on mainline service through major cities (Philly, Harrisburg, Allentown, Reading, etc.). The line was aquired in early 1991 by Reading & Northern. Currently they operate 1-2 trains per day through it.

The structures to the left & right of the tunnel housed ventilation fans which were contolled by an operator in the PJ Tower located outside of Pottsville in Mount Carbon (the signal bridge next to the where the tower stood still exists today). If trains were backed up, they used to let the fans run for 5 mins to clear out the smoke from steam locomotives before letting another train pass through. This was a very busy line until the decline of anthracite. Conrail shut the tower down I believe in 1978 or '79, putting an end to the ventilation fans.
