On route 11 in west nanticoke a little past the bait shop there is, what looks to be like a garage, with a telephone sign on it...i asked sombody about it and they said it was the second entrance to a mine. does anybody know about this?

yea, i heard of this. i was going to ask the owner on what this is. a few years ago i stopped there and there was cool air coming out of the key hole in the door. you can tell its definitely a slope opening though. i know a guy who said he was in there awhile ago and he said it went to water. the mine pool is quite high in that area. theres also some blown openings in that area if you look.

Possibly Part of the Chauncey, which was in the area, also nearby is a concrete buldg aprox 8 x 8 with a metal pipe about 4ft high inb the ctr of the roof there are no windows only a metal door with a rusty chain & lock. This is on the hillside.

as a side note there is another bldg like the concrete structure I saw on rt 11 in courtdale near west side tech. also accross from the Avondale site on 11 is another concrete enteranceway that goes into a mine however it is blocked by cinderblocks, there is one missing and you can look into it about 10 feet or so before it turns, this was part of the avondale, but the one w/the telephone sign may have been part of the Chauncey which was last operated by Glen Alden and closed in the late 40s-early 50s there was a breaker there, which burned in 1940 and Im pretty sure rebuilt, but is long gone now.

If its anything, (which it looks like it is or at least was) it would be a slope. Remember, shafts are vertical  Aparently someone decided to turn it into a garage or something. Thats one bad a*s garage....the mine air would provide free air conditioning in the summer, and it won't freeze in the winter. Pretty funny really.... If the mine is still intact behind the garage it's actually probably a good thing the garage was put in, becasue without it the whole opening would have probably been leveled. cool beans.

i do know that the mine pool is very high right here so it really wouldnt be worth getting in. i mean its only like 10 feet below here.
