Audenreid mine tunnel system to see repairs

SHEPPTON — Repair work will soon begin on an acid mine drainage treatment system in East Union Township.

June 2006 flooding damaged the intake system of the Audenreid Mine Tunnel and, according to Mark Carmen, DEP community relations coordinator, the conservation district is repairing the head works.

The repair project involves about 16 acres and consists of repairing an intake structure, limestone containment cells and settling ponds.

Wayne G. Lehman, Schuylkill County natural resource specialist, said Tuesday the mountain side of the mine tunnel collapsed after the heavy flow of water during flooding. He said the Schuylkill Conservation District is working with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency in the final stages of the project that will allow the facility to function at full capacity.

“Right now we are doing some final touch-ups. It is about 60 percent complete,â€
