In WV we call new miners "mater Heads". Don't know what they call green hats in Ky "Green mater heads"? "apple heads"? don't know.

I used to wear a hat that looked like that. When I worked at Aracoma, some of the guys on the longwall would wear those to keep water from running down their back. Other than that fact I still prefer the old MSA comfo cap. Low vein of course.

i come from a long line of truck drivers. when i first started going with my old man on runs, he gave me an old hat like that that had belonged to my grandfather, from an old trucking company that he ran back in the '50's and '60's. i wore it for years when i was on jobsites and for the first few years that i was workin' in steel shops, and would just wear a regular welding shield when i was welding. can only wear a company approved design at my job now, and that ain't it.

For those who don't know, that is the MSA Skullgard. While a classic design, it is still being produced today by MSA. Mt Hope and Scrub Oaks mines used mostly MSA Skullgards (closed in the 70's and 60's respectively). Common for a lot of hard rock mines out here.. Banks always calls these "Shaft Digger Helmets".

Richard Mine I know used the Hard Boiled Bullard Hard Hats. Those are pretty neat too, another full brim hat.

If I keep this up I'm going to have to get a MSHA charge number for my time, vs the one I have.

Distinced Colored Helmets are MSHA mandated. for at least 1 year or until the miner has state papers. Doesn't say what color but new hire and miner must be different.
