Wow! looks like someone's going old school! Seriously, though, is it being used for radiators? Because there is no better kind of heating than steam heating! (I also count fireplaces up there too.) Great way to keep in shape if you are snowed in!

It is hot water baseboard. I don't think this boiler is UL approved for steam, although I don't see why it wouldn't work. However the plan here is to tee into my existing system to be able to utilize my existing hot water zones for heat from the new boiler. The oil boiler will be used for backup, redundancy, and resale value (if the new owners don't like coal).

its too bad greg, the drive from your house to the region sort of makes bootleggin' cost prohibitive.

Just updated the project photo pages with some new updates. Hope you enjoy!

As per going old school, right now I am using bags. So no shoveling required!

I am also not so far from PA, if someone wants to visit after a mine trip with their pickup truck......

Hi Greg,
is that green hoist frame a commercial item or did you build it yourself?

Hello,

The crane was actually built by the dealer I bought the boiler from. He built it himself from a design he obtained somewhere. I thought he said it was for lifting engines, but it is really designed for a lot more weight than my boiler or the standard big block.

I have just uploaded the latest set of photos. We love our new heat source which helps heat the house and uses a fuel that supports local jobs and ecconomy while keeping our money out of OPEC.

I finally put out the fire 2 weeks ago. It certainly did the job and worked really well! I was still using bagged coal, while a lot more expensive, it ends up being about half the price of #2 fuel oil to heat my house and I was able to keep the thermostats higher. I have also done a few updates to allow me to auto switch over to coal and to automatically shut the coal burner off when the boiler is below temperature. This is helpful if the fire goes out to prevent the coal burner from feeding unburnt coal into the ashpan. Unburnt coal in the ash pan is a pain to clean up, unless you just want to throw away the good coal.

I plan to build a coal bin this summer and I will start using cheaper bulk coal. If I get coal delivered from PA, it should work out to be about half of what I am paying now. So it should work out to be a good savings.

That is good. what would you do if you were to stop using bagged coal?

Banks,

I need you to come over one day. Although if you conveyed it into my basement like that, I might have a 20 year supply! Cleaning the ash pan might be a little tricky though...

No it won't Greg, just get another one that conveys the ashes into a bin outside ;)
