Hi guys. There was an add in the local paper for a make and break engine, a 5 hp 1910 Knox. The add said it it had "minor issues". I went and found it was completely seized! I soaked the piston in diesel for a week and removed it. the rings were shot. There also is a crack in the rod, about 3" long. It is a hairline crack. I only noticed it because diesel built up in the area after I took it out of the bin it was soaking in to remove some of the residue that was on it. Should I weld up the crack or buy a new rod? The rod looks like the original.
Is there any way to salvage this old engine, or is it only good for parts? It would be a shame to see a piece of history get thrown in the junkyard.
I had never heard of a make and break before the add, I just like old machinery. So if anyone could give me a rundown on how one works, I would be very grateful.

Make and break engines were mostly used as marine engines, I think. Sounds like a cool project. If you can find a new rod then go for it. If not welder up the old one. There are a lot of ways to weld cast. Look it up on YouTube, there are a ton of good instructional videos there. POST PICS!!!

I'll try as soon as the camera is fixed. My dad has an old Canon, but there is no film, and I don't have a scanner.

Ok, the rings arrived today, and I decided to splurge on a new rod. I wanted to use the original, but I'm not too confident in my skills as a welder yet. I just finished a class called "Intro to Welding", so I'm not that good yet. However, I'm keeping the old rod so I can repair it in the future.
Also, I found a repair manual online, and I'm missing the ignition points! Back to the parts store/internet!

Running down parts for old iron is one of the fun parts I'm told. It's certainly not my favorite part though

It certainly is interesting, that is for sure. There is a friend of the family who is a fair machinist, so if need be, he could fabricate them for me, but I'd rather not, as I'd like to keep it as accurate as possible.

OK, after much debating, I decided to have the family friend fabricate the ignition points for me, as I can't afford to by originals. However, I am keeping up the search for them, just in case I find some within my budget. Hopefully, I will be able to fire her up this spring.

vee out that crack on both sides and leave about an eighth inch or less root opening. get yourself a nice laser heat gun, pre heat the thing to about 500 degrees. weld with nickel rods, 1/8th @ appx. 90 amps or 3/32 @ appx. 50-60 amps , then post heat it up to 800 degrees, and wrap it in controlled cooling blankets or sand so it cools as slowly as possible . make sure you do a pass on one side then flip it over and do a pass on the other so it doesn't deform.

Here is the thing. I'm not too good with TIG yet. MIG? Forget about it! I just started v-groove, and SMAW is OK, but not great. I'm only a 310 (Second class out of 4, each lasts a semester.) Maybe in Fab, I'll give it a try. Thanks for the advice on how to fix it , though!
