Dolan Mine

The Dolan Mine was opened in 1869 on land owned by Bishop Dolan. The mine was first developed by a shaft sunk to a depth of 120 feet. It passed through three minor shoots of ore but sometime afterward, the mine was closed. In 1883, the mine was leased by Dolan to Joseph Wharton and another shaft was put down 140 feet in depth. Shortly afterward, a tunnel was driven to intersect the vein, however no mining was ever to take place from it. In 1884, approximately 1,000 tons of magnetite ore were mined and shipped to Wharton's furnaces in Port Oram (now Wharton) and Hackettstown.

In 1885, another slope was sunk to a depth of 170 feet. From it, drifts were run northeast for 23 feet and southwest for 62 feet. Cars were then installed for hoisting and a 10 x 6 inch pump was placed in the original shaft. However, by 1886, the mine was permanently abandoned.
