(...continued) No adequate record of production exists prior to 1854 but from 1854 to 1864, approximately 105,000 tons of ore were produced collectively. In 1859, the Lower Wood Mine was leased to the Trenton Iron Company. By the beginning of 1864, the company had raised 20,365 tons. The Glendon Iron Company, which by 1862 leased the remaining properties except for the Willis, raised 84,155 tons from June 1, 1854 to the opening of the Hibernia Mine Railroad in 1864.
The Hibernia Mine Railroad was incorporated by various owners of the Hibernia mines including Theodore T. Wood who once owned the Lower Wood and Upper Wood mines and George Richards, general superintendent and manager of the Glendon Iron Company. The railroad initially provided a route from the mines to the Morris Canal and was later extended to connect with other railroads to transport the ore south.
