Finally in 1901, Wharton bought the capital stock of the Andover Iron Company, effectively securing ownership of the entire Hibernia ore belt.
At the Lower Wood Mine, the vein was worked through a system of 26 levels and multiple shafts. At the Willis Mine, which became the only portion operating after 1907, the mine was worked by way of more than 23 levels and reached a depth of about 2800 feet underground. Once Joseph Wharton connected a branch of his Wharton & Northern Railroad to the mine from the northeast after 1907, the Hibernia Underground Railroad fell into disuse and the mine stopped shipping using the Hibernia Mine Railroad.
