Hibernia Mine

(...continued) The mine was abandoned in 1916 after yielding a total production of more than 5 million tons and putting an end to almost 200 years of mining.

During its time, the Hibernia Mine supported two communities, one at the southwest and northeast end called Lower Hibernia and Upper Hibernia (or Oreland) respectively. Each village provided homes for the miners and schools. Built in 1869 through the donations of the Andover Iron Company, George Richards, and others, the Hibernia Methodist Episcopal Church was erected in Lower Hibernia. The village also featured a brewery, general store, and a hotel with a tavern.

In the 1950's, a new shaft was sunk at the extreme northeast of the orebody. However, no actual mining took place and the place was abandoned.
