(...continued) Sometime after 1972 and again in 1989, the shafts of the Hibernia tract were reclaimed and the open pit workings filled in. The Glendon Tunnel was blasted shut in 1989 but reopened shortly after following a public outcry due to the entombment of thousands of bats now hibernating in the long abandoned tunnel.
In the 1990's as the land transferred to state parkland, most of the remaining miners homes in Upper Hibernia were demolished.
The rich deposit of magnetite ore extended for more than a mile, was relatively uniform in quality with a width varying between 2 and 30 feet. The vein pitched 45 degrees and dipped 80 degrees to the southeast.
