The loaded mine cars would dump their cargo into them. And then the trucks or rail cars would transport the anthracite to the preparation plant or breaker. As a requirement of the lease with Moffat, all anthracite mined at leased properties were required to be prepared at the Moffat breaker.
As Moffat increased in size by the purchase of additional Glen Alden properties, it began to mine on its own, or sell tracts of land outright. So beginning in 1953-1954 Moffat began to operate the mine on its own. This continued almost to the end of the life span of Lehman slope. As a result of a declining market, combined with the high cost of deep mining, and increased public intolerance for mining related activities, the remaining companies started to strip or surface mine. The increase in production, combined with the low labor costs made this the last viable profitable method of mining.
