The Marble Mountain Mine was originally opened in 1860 but operated only briefly having found little ore. In 1880, the mine was reopened and high quality hematite ore was discovered within an area measuring 60 x 16 feet. Although it was reportedly of high quality, none of it was shipped. In 1886, a large open pit measuring 25 x 25 feet and 20 feet deep was excavated. The ore was approximately 11 feet thick and dipped at about 15 degrees southeast. From this, 1000 tons of ore were mined but this required the removal of 4000 tons of country rock. It is believed this was shipped.
The workings consist primarily of open pits. During the earlier years of the operation, an adit was drifted into the hillside. The adit had been stoped leaving behind a large chamber. There is evidence of a second tunnel but it is likely only exploratory. Not much else is known about the mine.
