(...continued) In 1906, the Leonard Shaft was sunk to access the Side Hill deposit and in 1907, the Carlton Shaft to access the Carlton vein. Among the more important openings was the Brown Shaft, sunk in 1900 at an angle of 64 degrees to reach the footwall of the Taylor ore body. The Brown Shaft worked the Taylor, Elizabeth, Side Hill (or Leonard) and Carlton ore bodies and connected with three main levels, the 300, 400 and 1000 foot level.
The Brown was the primary operating shaft until 1944 at which time modern facilities were erected and the New Leonard Shaft sunk. These new facilities were created in response to a strong demand of iron production during World War II. The sinking of the New Leonard Shaft began in 1941 and completed in 1944.
