(...continued) Eventually, the mine was acquired by the Ringwood Realty Corp., a subsidiary of Ford Motor Company. This company then proceeded to dump toxic waste from Ford's Mahwah, NJ plant directly into the shafts and throughout the site. This resulted in the poisoning of nearby residents.
The Peters Mine was declared a superfund site and cleanup work was still ongoing as of 2011.
