Tom Swift Mine is located in the Awakening District in Humboldt County, Nevada. Gold was first discovered in this district at the Alabama Mine in 1908 by Murray Scott. Between 1912 and 1918, several small mines were in operation nearby, producing gold as well as silver. Consequently, a 5 stamp amalgamation mill was constructed in the town toward the east. It is said that this mill processed 10,000 tons of ore including gold and silver.
The district received national attention after ex-President Herbert Hoover visited the Jumbo Mine in May 1937. Hoover spoke of the deposit favorably and the Jumbo Mine proved to be the largest producer of gold in the district until the discovery of the Sleeper deposit. The Sleeper Mine went on to produce 1,660,000 ounces of gold and 2,300,000 ounces of silver from 1986 to 1996.
