This historic mine has an interesting history. It was seized by the state of Connecticut in1775 from a British colonel who was working it for lead. The lead mined here was used to make bullets to supply our army to fight the British during the revolutionary war. The amunition made from the lead this mine produced was used at Saratoga and was shipped as far away as new hampshire. It was said that this mine would be the largest producer of lead for colonies during the revolution, but in 1778 it was fould to unprofitable to smelt the ore so operations ceased.
