Spent the other day exploring the abandoned Monarch-Rand Mine near Fremont Peak as well as an unnamed mine near Red Mountain.

The Monarch-Rand Mine has a very deep vertical shaft onsite that we estimated to be around 200 feet deep. The very massive tailings pile outside this shaft also gives a hint to its depth. One eerie thing we discovered deep in the mine was a makeshift shrine featuring a large, wooden cross. Various trinkets adorned the cross such as a police crime-scene tape, two children storybooks, cassette tapes, bullets, a dented hubcap, a tire rim, etc.. From these items, we concluded that perhaps a child had gotten killed in a car accident. Nonetheless, coming across this makeshift shrine at the end of a tunnel was definitely creepy.

The unnamed mine near Red Mountain featured an adit that led us to the bottom of an extremely narrow open stope. We could look up and see the sky! The tunnel continued on past the open stope, and we were surprised to find that it led to a large, underground talc deposit!

Nice find fhood! Perhaps you might find this interesting, albeit sad. We discovered this crude plaque near the entrance to a mine adit in Pershing County, Nevada, indicating the site of a murder that took place years ago. Perhaps you or someone else can help decipher it.
