SLOAN, SAMUEL (Dec. 25, 1817-Sept. 22, 1907)
President of the DL & W railroad, parent company of the DL&W coal company, later the Glen Alden coal company. Served as president from 1867 to 1899.Under his guidance the DL&W’s six feet was shifted to the standard 4'8 1/2". This feat was achieved in 1876, with a delay of traffic of only twenty-four hours.
The total cost of the improvement was $1,250,000.
In the decade 1881-1890, coal shipments increased thirty-two percent, general freight gained 160 per cent, and
passenger traffic, eight-eight per cent. Dividends of seven percent were paid yearly from 1885 to 1905. Although he resigned in 1899 he remained as chairmen of the board till his death in 1907.
It is interesting to note that his brother,an architect wrote a book about how to build concrete houses. And was also president of the Portland cement manufacturers association. Which was a huge online customer of the DL&W. Later concrete city was built near Nanticoke for the Truesdale colliery..
