In the last days of December 1910 and the first days of January 1911, photographer Lewis Hine took 44 images of mine workers in Luzerne County. The iconic photographs reveal a glimpse of what life and work was like in the anthracite coal fields of the Wyoming Valley at the beginning of the 20th century.
Two years earlier, Hine had embarked on a photojournalism expedition, determined to capture the faces of child laborers throughout America for the National Child Labor Committee For 9 years, he traversed more than 30 states capturing more than 5,000 images on his journey, helping to illuminate the pandemic of child labor in the early 20th century.
