I was told this was either a supply car or a rock dust car (or both depending on need):
A very interesting "bathtub" bottom car from the old Bethlehem Mines operation in nearby Ebensburg. Mine 33 has been rumored to reopen for some time.
This one looks to be an electric motor.
Part of the interesting exhibit in the main building.
The mine motor of the day was "Pisscutter 2". Glad I never had that nickname in college!
Heading around the outdoor loop. The tour train actually makes two loops, one outside and one inside the mine, so there is no backing up.
There is lots of track in the mine, leading to many neat rooms.
A walk through the gob anyone?
Safety first, everyday! Good luck!
The bulk of the tour outside of the train is at the face. It is a very cool room loaded with equipment.
Time to roll out...
The Seldom Seen is on the side of a mountain, high above the railroad. Coal from the mine was dumped from this tipple into a two car inclined plane, which took the load down to the valley floor. There, it was dumped into a conveyor to cross a stream and up hill on the otherside to a loader on the Pennsylvania Railroad. Wow!
Here is a car in the tipple.
The hoist house for the plane.
The hoist engine.
I highly recommend a visit!
