Eckley Miners’ Village holding out hope they will remain open

Dan Bobby, who’s played an evil coal company mine boss and a lovable homeless drunk, knows there are pictures of him and other members of the Eckley Players in photo albums across the country.
And while he says it with a smile, he is serious about the number of people who visit Eckley Miners’ Village from far and near to tour the museum or see a performance by the all-volunteer Players, a 19th- and 20th-century living-history re-enactment group based at Eckley that performs a variety of plays in the village and surrounding area.
It’s one reason why he believes the historical site near Freeland might not be among those that will be closed by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, which is planning to shutter a half-dozen state-owned historical sites in response to recently proposed state budget cuts.
