Coal still has a major role to play in the future of energy, according to state Rep. Robert E. Belfanti Jr.’s renewable/green energy coordinator for the lower anthracite region.
And Northumberland County is poised to take part in that, according to the latest coal production numbers released by the Pennsylvania Coal Association (PCA).
Northumberland County ranks third in the state for anthracite coal production, and fourth for anthracite coal industry employment, according to the PCA.
Coal, said PCA President George Ellis in a prepared statement, is still “the state and the country’s most affordable, reliable and abundant fuel source, and is well positioned to play a significant role in helping to secure our energy future.â€
