Eckley among sites that could be affected by budget cuts

HARRISBURG — State budget cuts could force the closing of a half-dozen state-owned historical sites and eliminate vital aid to local historical societies and museums.
The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission will start making plans next month to close between five to seven of the 23 historical sites it operates, director Barbara Franco told the House Appropriations Committee on Monday.
Gov. Ed Rendell has proposed cutting PHMC’s operating budget by $2 million. With the commission’s staff already reduced one-third since 2003, that will leave the commission seriously short-handed to run all its sites.
