ASHLAND — This year’s Labor Day weekend will be a lot less fun for many people in northern Schuylkill County.

The ABA Mummers Parade, which began as part of the annual weekend reunion of the Ashland Boys Association, has been canceled for 2009.

That is sad to see a tradition like that end. But I can understand the reasoning.

So, someone from the region educate me. What is a Mummer. I know that Philly has a big Mummers parade with colorful costumes, etc., But I have no clue as to the origin of the term.
