Does anybody know where the guys than compete in the hand steeling competitions get there jumpers and jacks

there is an international mining games "MUCKING" competition that college teams compete in and hand steeling is one of the competitions. Its usually in a concrete block but this year when they held the competetion in cornwall england it was a granite block!! :roll:

Ha! you should be able to find a jumper at any hard rock or anty mine laying around... and for the jack.. flea markets have some nice sledges for about $2 :wink:

hand steeling. is that what they did when the holes for the explosive were drilled by hitting a long metal bar with a hammer like John Henry?

Dave, you need to go to a library and find a copy of the book "Blown to Bits in the Mine" by Eric Twitty/Western Reflections Publishing. If they don't have a copy, try interloaning one.
This will give you some insight into mining practices.

You could try Caboose Hobbies in Denver or BookMine in Leadville. There was also a bookstore in Silverton but I don't recall the name.
If a copy is still on the shelves then those places are your best bet, I'd try the Caboose first. Surely your local library can interloan a copy?
