now do these indipendent operations use their own mines to start or do they intersect old openings/ workings?

It almost takes a act of congress to utilize or intersect old workings thanks too some blunders in the big bituminous operations. Most of the time the independant mines just find the outcrop of the vein and sink a new slope.
