Well back in September thanks to Pop Smoke (my dad) got our square wheels on the mine car turned down for FREE, originally the quote from Belrick's in Luzerne said it would cost about $60-$70 an hour!! Well my dads best friend is a boss at a machine shop and they turned them down for us, he said the wheels were maid of extremely hard stell and each wheel took almost two days on the lathe and was shattering evry bit on the flat spots. He said if he were charging us it would cost close to $2,200!! So here are the pics of them going on.

yea i remember that. that was a good time replacing them. pretty thankful for your dad to get that done for us. that thing rolls so sweet now with the round wheels and roller bearings! if i remember right didnt we drop the car on the ground once trying to get the axles under?

I bet they were chilled cast wheels is why they were so hard. If they were cutting with carbide it still should have cut that. When we turn wheels especially the mine car ones they always tend to have a ring while cutting but if it starts to chatter we just adjust our speeds and feeds. We also use a big Warner & Swasey lathe that has a big casting. You were lucky to get that turned for free. That is awesome.

Even ven the hardest cast iron is only 300 brinell hardness and that is the same as 300 series stainless. I het they had a hard time holding it in the machine. It looks like they did a good job though.

The best way to get around a problem like that is use a set of aluminum pie jaws to grip more surface area.

Wow 2200 to have the wheels done? Makes me glad I only restore cars.... seriously though, nice project!

yea, kind of ironic, spend all that time to make a nice mine car to run. take the wheels off and have them turned from stop signs to round just to have the car sit now. :roll: oh well, its only temporary.
