But, the rail is only spread a few inches. How difficult can it be?

And the Locos only weight on the order of 130 tons, I'm guessing.

(Early Alco's are about 110 and those are larger.?

Bad track on a curve that will do it. Rolled that rail right over. The good thing is that they were not going fast. Little bit of blocking they will probably just rerail them.

That is going to be expensive. Espically if they cant drag them back on. From the looks of the track it will prob keep spreading

A lot may depend on if one end can't get access to an engine.

If they try to pull them back on, my guess is to remove cars that are on the rail. install a ton of gauge bars to hold the rail. Bring one on and fix the rail it damages. Then proceed to the next car, or engine.

With the weight of the engines that may not be possible.

The expensive route involves bringing in some sidewinders and haul them to good track.

No matter how they do it, getting those motors and those hoppers back on track is going to suck and be expensive. Great pictures, I feel for the crew, it's never a good feeling when you go on the ground.

My wife and I looking at this and she's sitting there asking all that weight
on light rails? Why?

It is hard to tell from the picture, but the rail doesn't look that light. I would guess 100#.

The ties and roadbed show show some age. My guess is this track was built as a siding or branch line for 4-axle engines, and things have grown in size. Assuming the speeds are real low, the only reason to relay heavier rail would be if the old rail was heavily worn or cracked.

Keep in mind 6 axle power has a lighter footprint then 4 axle.

Does not look to bad at all...Some chain and wedges work wonders.

The track dosent look all that bad but once you roll a rail over and drop between the gauge it just pushes all the spikes out and keeps spreading

Well they had the diesels back on track yesterday. The track crew is here today fixing the rail, all will be just honkey dorey tomorrow.
