I'm impressed with the technology.

Here is Pioneer Tunnel in Ashland Pa.

nope, read wrong. there is 2 old drift entrances one for the second level thats dumping water out and blown shut and the drift entrance for the buck gangway at the end of the mine which is also blown shut. no other way in.

well we go in a tunnel not a drift, a tunnel cuts through the veins, a drift is run in with the coal. it was sealed by p&r c&i when they closed the mine. it was reopened in the 60s to the orchard gangway for a walking tour. the tunnel was stripped into just past there and the pit was then filled in so the tunnel was blocked. in the late 60s and early 70 the tunnel was reopened by forepoling (timbering) through the stripping mud..... this is where and why the dip is in the tunnel. and the tour extended back to the buck gangways as far as feasible. there is not too much to see outside the tour as its all robbed and caved badly.
