This past Saturday, we spent the day visiting a few Iron mine sites in NY state. Most noteworthy, we made another return visit to one of our favorites in Putnam County NY. The mine was a little icy at this time of the year, but we wanted to take some more photos of the mine for our upcoming slide show. Here is a little preview of the shots I took, we have many shots to go through for the final slide show, but these are a few good ones from Saturday's trip..

Wow that mine is in a place you would never just find on your own  I still don't know why I never took a picture in that mine or told anyone where it is

Yea, sometimes mines are located in the most damnedest of places. Wherever there is ore, it will be extracted. Wharton, NJ is notable for having large deposits located in the center of town and behind people's backyards. The town was not built up after the mines had closed. Instead, the mines were operating within the town's grid as late as the early 1900's. A stroll down Main Street would have you see multiple headframes from the sidewalk! These mines included Orchard Mine, Huff Mine, Hurd Mine, Mount Pleasant Mine, and Washington Pond Mine to name a few.

It really must have been quite the operation to see during its time. Beneath the water table is likely a time capsule of mining history. Also submerged underwater is a narrow gauge railroad bridge that spanned over a portion of the stope.
