Does anyone know of evidence visible on the ground of charcoal production as part of an iron mining complex?

I believe that I know of a site that had the hut for the charcoal burner and two adjacent but downwind "kilns", the remains of which are small oval rings, apparently of clay.

Welcome to the site! I've seen many sites that show some evidence of charcoal production. I generally haven't been documenting the sites because they really don't photograph well. In what area did you observe these? I wish they would photograph well as it could be an interesting thread, but generally the evidence isn't defined well enough to photograph.

I think this site will photograph okay -- especially the remains of the hut itself. I have a posting related to this on

and got a little feedback.
In that posting I mention a German video showing a charcoal burner coming "out of retirement" in 2004 to make charcoal the old, direct way.
My plan is, perhaps as early as this December, to bring a group of my 8th-grade students out to the farm to photograph the site and begin to clean it up.
