I have not been there. I know it was a huge operation owned by New Jersey Zinc company, but I'd love to know what is left. I figured the majority of the site was remediated and that there is nothing left.

If you look around the internet for the D&RGW RR stuff and info on "Tennessee Pass" the station name was "Belden" serving the mines.
Since the line was mothballed after the Union Pacific takeover there have been a few "sorties" into the canyon below Redcliff that have been posted up. Supposedly it was off-limits once upon a time.

I recently saw this as a report on a British UE site. The visit was is 2010.

It is a two part report that mentions they were off to explore the underground mill at Belden but no report has been posted. If you follow the links to the author's flicker account and dig a bit you'll find this.

Quite the time capsule.

There is more to be found on google. Gilman was the town, Belden was the name of the mill and the station name on the railroad and the Eagle Mine was owned by NJ Zinc.

I currently live in the wrong rust belt.

Very interesting photos, thanks for posting the links up. I had no idea that this much of the operation still existed today. Generally when you think superfund project, you would think nothing is left. The ore cars sure have a Sterling Hill look and feel to them, very neat!

They mention that the mine was plugged, I am wondering if at a lower level this mine drained, but the EPA closed up the drainage tunnels to allow the mine to fill up with water? Many times drainage tunnels are never closed up with the fear around when the plug breaks and where the water will go when this happens. Other concerns are as the water rises, water generally finds a way out of the mine potentially causing problems worse than just letting the mine drain on it's own.
