The last line of the article, "China produces about double the amount of coal official media say it can safely mine." Interesting, but as stated by former miners in the US who we have spoken to, almost all accidents and deaths that took place in miners were due to carelessness in the mine. Whether it was from not scaling the loose after a blast, or not paying attention to what you are doing by a railroad underground, almost all accidents are by someone making mistakes or not following the rules.
While I don't have the details on the cause of the accident, unproper ventilation of a coal mine that wasn't inspected when it should have been could have caused methane buildup. I don' t know if I would want to work in a mine in a third world country...
