Pair pushing for mining museum at former bank site

WILKES-BARRE – James Burke is tired of looking at the plywood door on what he says is the finest building on Public Square.

Burke and his friend, architect Don Sanderson, want to establish an Anthracite Miners Museum in the former First National Bank building at 59-63 Public Square. The building is owned by the city, and Burke said Monday he is frustrated by the lack of response from Mayor Tom Leighton on the proposed project.

Burke wants to lease the building for the museum. He said he sent two letters to Leighton in December – on the 10th and on the 20th – and Leighton has not responded.

The mayor said Monday he is “100 percent behindâ€

My grandmother told me about this project. I plan on putting my grandfather's story in there if that's what they're after as far as a library of records goes. She told me about the miner in tile on the floor, that was their bank.

If they don't put the museum in there im going to be disgusted. The mayor probably has money tied up in the other development companies somehow, and stands to make a bit. That would be a perfect spot... with a building like that it would have the potential to be the nicest mining museum in the nation.



but naww, lets make condos out of it instead with gambling tables downstairs... we can call it Vegas Barre!

Id rather see it go for a commercial purpouse, to provide jobs, rather than spending more taxpayer money on something that doesnt produce any return. If this can be funded privately, Im all for it, otherwise the building should be sold and redeveloped.
