If you really like the mining stuff and you are thinking about getting into after the college thing as a profession you really should get yourself a MSHA approved low pro one. They are only about $120 bucks or so. Almost all of us use Koehler Mine lights there a few MSA ones floating around.

You can find decent MSA Comfo Caps and Koehler Wheat lamps and chargers on e-bay. You could probley get everything you need for about $100. Triple that amount if you want brand new.

Keep in mind though that the comfo caps listed on ebay all appear to be used. If they are out of their packaging, then they are "used" and you have no way of knowing what abuse they have taken to potentially weaken them. While they may all be in safe condition, maybe it is worth spending the full $36.50 from http://www.4bobandbob.com/ to know you are getting one that has never seen a mine.

Good point Mike. You never know what you get until it comes to your door.

On Helmets I would vote for just buying a new one. By the time you buy on E-Bay and pay shipping. It's not worth it.

bobandbob's are good to deal with and their prices are in line. I think there is a mine supply in the Scranton area that sells retail, also. Banks or Chris will know.

The Low-pros are real nice, but ... they are real proud of them. About 4x the price of a new comfo-cap.

Lights, if you are patient and do you homework. Some deals can be found on E-Bay.

You certainly can get new stuff on EBay too, but for something like a Comfo-Cap, since they are available new for so cheap, you really wouldn't want to get a used one..

Truthfully, If i need a MSHA hat my uncle can probably kook me up, im looking for something tailored towards caving that would double as rock climbing, goodenough to keep a good sized rock from scrambling my noggin. Also in hardrock mines is any type of headlamp ok or what?

Got a quick question you experts can probably help me with. I have a MSA comfo-cap with date screw dating it to june of 1972. I can tell it is of plastic or something nature from the ejection pin marks where it was molded. it's white on inside, painted goldish on outside for why i don't know but otherwise, in mint shape as far as i see. liner and all like new. approx. 6 inches tall as you measure up side to top. Is this a legal cap? is it low coal hat?? And is it worth more than the 50 bucks a guy is offering me? lol ThanksMen.

yeah, lol I Have many miner friends that are buying these older caps and wearing them. This one doesn't appear to have been worn more than a few times. Heighth wise, it measures the same as a friends low coal one he wears. That is why i was asking. :)

Can't recall who posted the link or if that guy still has an e-bay listing, but last year or early this year someone posted a link on here to a guy who bought out some Koehler lamps from a nickle mine in Canada. A bunch of us got them, only $25 each. Very good condition, work great. I got a brand new cap, MSHA, for $35. Looks like on line today they go for around 45-47 bucks so I guess I got a deal on both. Very happy with the lamps, I got 2 and Scott topped me off with the acid solution, got 26 hours out of one of the lights before it went dim.
